Loved the porch and decking. Two level porch allowed ocean view without the railing at eye level. Kitchen very well equipped, but no cabinet left empty for food. Purchases must be placed on the counter. Bedrooms comfortable; living area furniture sturdy and comfortable also. We hope to return to this house again.
Martin house was much nicer (partly) than pictures indicate; rooms were larger than they looked online. Landscaping was nice; it appeared that decking/stairs were fairly new. Our first "surprise" - one of the front bedrooms had a heavy, noticeable "wet basement" smell. We deemed it a potential health hazard and eliminated it from ones we could use; we closed it off to keep the kids out. I had to spend the week in a twin bed, not what I had planned. I work in the environmental health field and know that these smells come from present or past water damage and that spores from mold/mildew are present in either carpet/paneling/or ceiling. I called this concern in; the person sent out found no visible mold/mildew but did agree the room had a very noticeable "wet basement" smell and that they would report it for future attention. I said I would be requesting a partial refund for not having the entire house at our disposal. I spoke to the rental company about this; they contacted the owners after our stay and said the owners refused to give any credit for this issue as they had a family member who had issues with mold/mildew who had no problems with this room and that no one else had complained about this. Wow...; really? This room stank because it needs remediation. Laundry room is under the house and is only accessed from outside. It rained for 3 days during our stay; this was truly a pain to deal with. Bathtubs are really dated/aged. Bathmats looked and smelled as if they had not been washed in years, and caulking needs to be done in the tubs. The only TV with a large number of channels is in the main room; other TVs only have basic cable options. Main room couch/chairs look like they date to the 70's; cushions offer virtually no support/are uncomfortable to sit on for any extended time. Some lamps are old/worn/need attention; electrical connections for bulbs are loose, lights sometimes go on and off if someone walks by and the lamp gets some vibration.
Our first time renting with Emerald Isle Realty and our first time in the Martin House. We were very pleased with the staff and service. The home was very clean and comfortable with nice furnishings that created a relaxing atmosphere. The deck furniture was very comfortable and allowed us to spend many hours on the deck when we were not on the beach. I would recommend trimming the bushes on the dune, just off the deck, to improve the ocean view and to trim away branches that extend over the railings on the boardwalk to the beach. The Martin House is a great treasure tucked away in a very nice neighborhood with excellent access to all the charms of Emerald Isle
